Alongside the traditional Cinco de Mayo celebrations happening in South Omaha this weekend, community members will have the opportunity to get a free COVID-19 vaccination.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, anyone 18 and older can visit El Centro de la Comunidad Maya Pixan Ixim, located at the front of Plaza de la Raza at 4913 S. 25 St., to get a free vaccination.
La Casa del Pueblo, a community organization, is teaming up with the Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) and local health care providers to host the event. County health department staff members will administer the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Vaccinations against COVID-19 are safe, effective and recommended as the most effective way to stop the spread of the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
While the vaccine is available to anyone 18 and older, those who are 18 must have a parent or guardian with them to receive it. No insurance or documentation is required for the free vaccination, and bilingual practitioners will be available to assist individuals.
“We view this as an incredibly important outreach effort,” said Phil Rooney, Resource Specialist at DCHD.
