El Día de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a holiday celebrated during November
1st through November 2nd. Although marked throughout Latin America, El Día de los Muertos is
most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated. El Día de los Muertos
honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations. El Día de los Muertos celebrates the lives
of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. The most
familiar symbols of El Día de los Muertos may be the flores and calaveras (flowers and skulls),
which are used to decorate the altar or the ofrenda.
ISC is hosting an ofrenda – an offering table – from October 15th until November 8th. This
ofrenda – or offering table – is free and open to the public. Our community is more than
welcomed to bring an offering to add to our display. During this time, ISC will be selling
miniature sugar skulls for $2 apiece. The Intercultural Senior Center offers education to our
diverse senior citizens about El Día de los Muertos through activities and celebrations. For more
information about ISC’s Día de los Muertos exhibit or other services ISC offers, please contact
the Intercultural Senior Center at (402) 444-6529 or (402) 933-2643 and ask for Anahi Reynoso,
Director of Social Services, or Carolina Padilla, Executive Director.
