The 12th New Americans Arts Festival starts Friday in Benson. But this year’s event has a new theme amid heightened national tensions for immigrants: Unity.

Organizers of the festival, which honors the artistic contributions of immigrants, migrants and refugees, hope it will bring some joy during a time of increased fear and uncertainty for these populations.

John-Paul Gurnett, the communications and creative director for the host organization BFF Omaha, said having a place for joy is especially needed for new Americans right now when there are increased fears for the community.

“I think that, you know, we’re not going to shy away from it, but also creating those opportunities for joy, for expression, for happiness, is kind of where we’re at,” Gurnett said.

The festival is free to attend. Gurnett added organizers and artists want it to be a vehicle for deeper conversations about the role of new Americans in Benson and its surrounding communities.

“We’re not going to ignore the rhetoric that’s happening,” he said. “But you know how, can we create an inclusive environment where we are focused on the arts, we are focused on the contributions, and really letting that speak for itself?”

Gurnett said he hopes the opportunity for immigrants and refugees to utilize art will foster a more inclusive community.

“I think that sometimes, a lot can get lost when we’re trying to, you know, fight that good fight, because we always do. But I think moments of rest, relaxation, joy, celebration are just as important,” he said.

The festival has more than 80 vendors, community partners, musicians and creators participating. Special galleries will highlight artists from all over the world. The festival intends to show art as a tool of expression that is available to anyone, from anywhere.

It is sponsored by the Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement (CIRA) and soundarte.net.
